Something Something Phobias – Day 3

Day 3, Friday: Things that make you uncomfortable

Did you know that there are a lot of something-something phobias out there?
Common classics today include Atychiphobia, Decidophobia, Glossophobia, Hamartophobia, Katagelophobia, Motorphobiaba – and even more serious cases like Androphobia and Papaphobia? I’m of course not spared from these not-so-rational fears, and will  examine mine today in the blog every day challenge – Day 3.

1 Fear of failure, Fear of making decisions, Fear of public speaking, 4 Fear of committing an error, 5 Fear of being ridiculed, Fear of men, Fear of the pope

Musophobia – Fear of Rats & Mice. My fear of rats has its roots in a very traumatic experience that happened once upon a time in Sweden. A little mouse decided to uninvitedly wake me up in the middle of the night –  a lot of screaming and mice traps later – Mr. Jingles life came to a sudden death. When my boyfriend at the time went to take out the corpse, the head of the mouse was completely gone and could never be found. I probably don’t have to tell you that for many years, my dreams were hunted by headless mice. To fast-forward to the present, Hong Kong is an awesome city in many ways but it’s not only overcrowded with people,  the rat community literally takes over the city during the summers – I have seen them tiptoeing on bar disks in Soho (seriously), chilling out in restaurants and even attacking our precious tourists (not joking, check out this article!). The frequent encounter of these guys has made my REALLY paranoid that they next will start to invade my home! Yes my dear friends, Rats can find their way into apartments through the toilet pipes – it’s NOT an urban myth!

Acrophobia – Fear of heights. This is one of the top 10 global fears among humans, in which I’m forced to tick the box. As long as I can remember, I felt unpleasantly dizzy at tall heights – starting thinking all kind of irrational thoughts like “What If I fall? What If a strong wind takes me along? What if I for some reason would jump”?. While people with acrophobia are afraid of being at a significant heigh, there is a related fear named Illyngophobia – which instead refers to those not afraid of the height itself – but instead develops a sense of dizziness or vertigo when looking down. Bugger, one more phobia added to the list.

Galeophobia – Fear of Sharks. I never had to worry about these murderous animals in Sweden so this is a new one. Saying that, I’ve always had rather bad relationship with sharks – not due JAWS –  but instead because of my dear brother, who forced me to watch the chilling episode where Donald Duck almost was eaten by a shark. With this this in mind, no wonder I’m recently being overly paranoid about wakeboarding and swimming in the South China Sea. Yes, I know – there hasn’t been a FATAL attack in Hong Kong since 1995 – but there are sharks out there and they DO EAT people. Nope, not falling for the only-happens-one-in-a-million statistics.

Here’s one for you: thalasaphobia. That’s the morbid fear of the sea. Ever since I was little, if I stare down into dark water, I’m positive there’s something staring back waiting to grab me.
