Chicken feet and other unpleasant things – Day 22

Day 22, Wednesday:
Rant about something. Get up on your soapbox and tell us how you really feel. (a pet peeve, a current event, a controversial topic, something your husband or roommate or neighbor or boss does that really ticks you off)

Anyone following my blog know that I love Hong Kong as a city. Saying that, there are a few things about this place that drive me absolutely crazy and would be more than happy to live without.

1. Farting cab drivers – since when is it okay to fart in someone elses presence? Don’t tell me it’s a cultural thing – it’ not! I understand that being on the road has it’s challenges in regards to when, how and where one can visit the toilet. But farting while there are passengers in the car is a big NO-NO. Seriously? should this even be discussed?

2. Burning paper in-house – Picture this; I’m waking up in my apartment by a heavy smell of smoke. Freaked out, I fast realise that the smell is coming from the hallway and make my out there. The reason – a fire in an unattained metal container.WTF@@@###XXX@@@? A bucket of water later and the situation was under control. If you are not familiar with Hong Kong culture, I’m sure this sounds crazy (I still think it’s insane). The reason behind; older generation Hong Kongnese are very superstitious and there are a lot of cultural rituals to keep the different gods’ happy and content – including the old tradition of burning ancestral-related papers. What happened with NOT playing with fire ? Or at least do burning out-doors?

3. Hong Kong Summers – this is the only time when I feel like jumping on a plane to Europe and never come back. Hong Kong Summers’ are really.just.quite.miserable. While European summers are hot and dry, Hong Kong is nothing but humid and bombarded with typhoons.

4. Chicken feet – Sorry dear Hong Kong friends. Despite being here for six years, I have NEVER got use to the slippery-longnail-bony-chicken feet . There is simply nothing appealing about them (not even the high levels of collagen). Please have a detailed look at the below picture and then tell me why anyone would like these into their mouth?

My parents used to live in Hong Kong and visiting them was always an experience and a half. The vibe in that place is just amazing.
